I connected to a Centos 6.2 from a Windows machine via VNC.
It seems to not allow admin functions like install/update software. The authentication is ignored.
It works fine when I use a local terminal.
Am I missing something?

Can't install software over VNC
Welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.
I have seen similar problems with some brain-damaged X servers where consolehelper does not start to request the root password. A work-around is to become root and run the required tools from the command-line. If memory serves the underlying problem has something to do with XDMCP.

Re: Can't install software over VNC
For what it's worth, I experience this problem if I run vnc by itself. But, if I use nx which tunnels vnc through an ssh session, then I don't. I don't know what the difference is, but the latter is more secure anyway.
