AMD Kernel patch to support newer chipsets / cpu's ?

Post by GamesBond » 2011/08/18 19:06:51

I am installing CentOS 6.0 on an Asus E35M1-M Pro to make an energy efficient server.

The results so far with this board are only moderately encouraging, when putting high load on the harddrive i get time out errors and i found a lot of postings on forums about trouble with the onboard network card but anyways, back to the real problem

This mobo is equipped with the AMD A50M Fusion chipset and AMD Fusion E-350 CPU.

When CentOS is booting, it is only recognizing 2.6 Gb of the available 8 Gb RAM.

This has to do with a patch that got included in kernel 2.6.38 but apparently is not included in the stock RHEL6 kernel.

I tried installing CentOS plus kernel, no change.

dmesg says this :
New variable MTRRs
reg 0, base: 0GB, range: 2GB, type WB
reg 1, base: 2GB, range: 512MB, type WB
reg 2, base: 2560MB, range: 128MB, type WB
reg 3, base: 2687MB, range: 1MB, type UC
e820 update range: 00000000a7f00000 - 000000023f000000 (usable) ==> (reserved)
WARNING: BIOS bug: CPU MTRRs don't cover all of memory, losing 5103MB of RAM.

Some more information about AMD's kernel patch here :

And a thread on the Asus support site here :
http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20110307005819128&board_id=1&model=E35M1-M+PRO&SLanguage=en-us&page=2

Where can i make a request for the update to be included in the CentOS plus kernel or is there any repository i can switch on to get a newer kernel for my box?

Thanks a lot for any help!

Surely, by now, you are aware of the CentOS bug tracker? It would be appropriate for you to make your request in ID #4586.

Please include the two above links, for toracat's benefit, in your bug tracker RFE.

Uhmmm.... by now i am aware of the CentOS bug tracker (i wasn't before, hahaha)

I created the bug report :
http://bugs.centos.org/bug_view_page.php?bug_id=5046

Unfortunately made a mistake in private vs. public therefore the bug report is not public viewable. I seems i am not able to edit my own bug report, hope someone picks it up and changes it into public again.

Thanks a lot for the tip!

I suspect it would also be a good idea to raise a bug on the upstream bugzilla to try to get the patch integrated into the RH version of the kernel.

I've changed the viewing status to public. Will take a look at the patch for future inclusion in the centosplus kernel.

As noted in the bug report, this patch is already in the CentOS 6.1 kernels (but not 6.0 kernels). There is no plan for more 6.0 cplus kernels. Please wait for CentOS 6.1 (or 6.0 CR) to come out. Or try the test kernels.
