CentOS

The latest Samba4 version available in CentOS 6.9 is 4.2.10-12 (as of today) but the Samba site has 4.2.10 listed as "do not use". 4.2.11 has a bug fix for a regression. I'm not sure if that's the reason for the note but I'm more interested in the update schedule. 4.2.10 was out in 2016. Where might I find out whether Samba will be updated for CentOS 6? I'd rather not migrate to compiling as opposed to rpm.

RHEL 6.10 is in beta upstream and could conceivably contain updates to lots of things but, in general, CentOS 6 is now in what's known as "Production Phase 3" upstream. That means that no new hardware support and no new enhancements to the packages it contains will occur. Even security fixes are now limited to those marked as "Critical".

However, critical bugs will still get fixes (and sometimes lower severity bugs too, at Redhat's discretion). Please see https://access.redhat.com/security/updates/backporting/ for information on backporting of security fixes and features in CentOS and RHEL.

In any case, the samba 4 that's in CentOS 6 is of limited utility, it's there for a specific purpose (one I don't remember) and the main samba version is 3.6.23.

Thanks. I had forgotten Samba4 was not intended to be a "really" supported thing in CentOS 6. I'll focus on migration to CentOS 7.

It appears that smbclient does not support SMB2 or SMB3 in any 3.6. Since there is no support for SMB2/3 in cifs in CentOS 6 kernels, Samba4 would be the only way to connect with a Windows share that had proper security disabling SMB1. Samba 3.6 seems to only support SMB2/3 for Samba shares.

Is this the reason Samba4 was added? Are my assumptions correct regarding limited support of SMB2 in CentOS 6?
