[SOLVED] how to install xdvi ?

Post by centguy » 2011/09/16 17:17:12

It seems CentOS 6.0 is always giving lots of surprises !!

I am trying to use xdvi and after trying many different combinations, I have not found the solution yet:

[root@centos60-fuj ~]# xdvi

I cannot not believe it.

note added: I am sorry I wrongly posted this under CentOS 5. This should be under CentOS 6.0.

[SOLVED] how to install xdvi ?

Post by toracat » 2011/09/16 17:51:43

Moved to CentOS 6.

xdvik seems to be available from the PUIAS distro:

http://elders.princeton.edu/data/puias/6/

Have not used it myself, but their packages are supposed to be compatible.

How to proceed? Download all relevant rpms ? Which one?

How to treat this like a repo and use yum install to finish up the job?

No luck.

I may want to give Scientific Linux 6 a try later.

Final update:

If I forsake yum localinstall and go for rpm -ivh it work.

rpm -ivh xdvik-22.84.14-8.puias6.x86_64.rpm

Done.

(But I am still intrigued by the fact that why do I have to hunt up and down for a simple thing that is supposed to be
included in the standard latex installation ? xdvi viewer should be always be there in the first place.)

'yum localinsall' would have worked if you had imported the PUIAS key:
rpm --import http://puias.princeton.edu/data/puias/6/x86_64/os/RPM-GPG-KEY-puias
As to why these things are not in CentOS ... it's the upstream's decision. For example, tetex-xvi is available for RHEL-5 but it was dropped in RHEL-6. Perhaps they thought it was not needed in Enterprise class Linux ??? CentOS is only a clone, so packages not in RHEL are not in CentOS.

Thanks. I am sure there are others who might need the information you have given.

I guess more and more people are using pdflatex (that get the final output in pdf in one step)
rather than the original latex (that generate .dvi) and that's why the upstream omitted it. pdf is cool but
it is not as convenient compared to xdvi that is extremely fast in href navigation. I am sure
it will be included in later version of 6.x.

To summarize, these simple might solve the issue.
rpm --import http://puias.princeton.edu/data/puias/6/x86_64/os/RPM-GPG-KEY-puias
yum localinstall http://elders.princeton.edu/data/puias/6/x86_64/os/Addons/xdvik-22.84.14-8.puias6.x86_64.rpm
BTW, how to mark this thread as [SOLVED] ?
