[SOLVED] LTSP 5.2

Post by pschaff » 2011/08/03 17:58:10

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature, and pay particular attention to the guidance on bumping a thread. If you need real-time response try IRC.

A google on LTSP centos-6 OR centos6 OR rhel6 OR "red hat enterprise linux 6" seems to indicate that it may be possible, but is not yet well-supported. The best I could see from a quick look was this thread which in turn led to upstream BZ#598134 and to Fedora 13 packages. Unfortunately no SRPMS were provided there. Very bad form IMHO.

Further reading turns up this thread, the EL6 Status page, and this. If there are working EL6 packages and/or directions out there I failed to find them.

Dear All,

This is a real problem for my organisation, I really want to use CentOS instead of OpenSuse or Ubuntu - who do support LTSP.

Does anybody have any knowledge of a time line when this will be available in RHEL and then to CentOS 6 ?

grt, James

I notice a familiar name, Les Mikesell, from the CentOS Users ML on many of the LTSP threads. You might try posting a question there. If you do, please provide a link to this thread there, and provide an update here if you find out more, so future forum searchers can benefit from the knowledge.

dear All,

I did just that.

here's the conversation with Les:

thanks for the reply.

I'll just go back to CentOs 5.6 then.

Any chance you could point me to a wiki or guide to get ltsp installed
on CentOs 5.6?

greetings, James

Per the k12osn mail list, a public beta for the 6.x version is supposed
to be close. Watch the status at
https://fedorahosted.org/k12linux/wiki/EL6Status

For 5.x, if you are installing from scratch, I'd still use the respin at
ftp://k12linux.mesd.k12.or.us/pub/K12LTSP/5.0.0-EL-32bit/
and then do a yum update to current. Or at least do this on a virtual
machine with 2 nics to see how it works before trying to duplicate it.
There are some scripts that make it work out of the box in the 2-nic
configuration (a private net for booting clients and a LAN facing side
with nat support for the private net).

So again thanks to Les Mikesell for clearing this up.

Thanks for reporting back. Do you consider this topic to be [RESOLVED] for now, or would you prefer to leave it open pending further developments on the LTSP front?

Sorry to jump on this almost "resolved" thread, but the beta for SL/RHEL/CentOS 6 seems to be very far along with Warren Togami Jr. ! There is a "private" beta with decent instructions for those of us that have contributed to the fund drive. Hey! is that my company at the top of the list :-D

Because SL 6 was out first, the initial info is geared toward it. With more CentOS 6 feedback, that can change!

Dear All,

this is indeed so, thanks Warren and others.

I had a look today at

https://fedorahosted.org/k12linux/

Great demo film, and works great.

Thanks to that I was able to boot a thinclient in 20 minutes.

Do Solved I would say.

greetings, James
