tail: inotify cannot be used, reverting to polling w/symlink

Post by wsanders » 2014/09/03 18:34:28

There are a few discussions elsewhere about the harmless and annoying "tail: inotify cannot be used, reverting to polling" message. Turns out it is *not* a resource issue, at least in my case, and is a bug or feature in tail printed when tail reads a symlink. I haven't seen a reference to ths behavior elsewhere, so hope this helps.

This error is popping up only on the Centos 6.5 hosts in our Centos6.5/Suse11/Suse12 forest, version "tail (GNU coreutils) 8.4" that installed with Centos. To wit:

Code: Select all

-bash-4.1$ ls -l 1 2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 18 Sep  3 18:26 1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  1 Sep  3 18:26 2 -> 1
-bash-4.1$ tail -n1 1
9
-bash-4.1$ tail -n1 2
tail: inotify cannot be used, reverting to polling
9
-bash-4.1$

This is due to a downstream fix. The upstream fix (present in centos 7) did essentially the same thing but silently reverted to polling rather than issuing this warning message.

Unfortunately that bugzilla is inaccessible to normal mortals :-(
CentOS 6 will die in November 2020 - migrate sooner rather than later!
CentOS 5 has been EOL for nearly 3 years and should no longer be used for anything!
