WHM Server update from Centos 6 to 7 and then 8 HELP

Post by TacoBill » 2020/11/13 19:57:28

I am looking for the best way to upgrade my WHM (cpanel) server to v7 and then 8
I have several plugins for stream audio and video installed as well.

I am sure someone will crucify me for not doing this earlier but has to be done in the next 7 days.
I have my VMserver remote about 30 miles away but have been Quarantined for past 10days because of Covid.
I am leery about doing it remotely and not being on site.

No, sorry, there is NO UPGRADE from one CentOS version to another. You need to reinstall the system (or better, set up a parallel one) and migrate your apps and settings to it.

CentOS follows RHEL and has a 10 year lifespan but there is no upgrade from one major version (i.e. 6->7 or 7->8) as it is expected that you will be reinstalling any 10 year old system on newer hardware.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

As said, the is no "upgrade to". You can install 7 or 8 (or something else).
In every case the availability and config of "plugins" is most likely different than what it was in 6.

Note also that while CentOS Linux 7 should remain usable to 2024, the CentOS Linux 8
lasts only to the end of this year and CentOS Stream 8 to 2024 or so.

There are RHEL Developer Subscription, Oracle Linux, and Springdale Linux and soon possibly
Alma Linux and Rocky Linux that could be alternatives for CentOS Linux 8.

I used WHM's backup feature, to backup each hosted account from the old server, and then I used a script to migrate the cPanel/WHM backup into a plain CentOS 8 server.

I'll send you details via PM.
