The java browser appears to be broken in centos6+updates:

# yum install java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, presto, refresh-packagekit
Setting up Install Process

On my RHEL6 box, when I try to install the java plugin, it installs icedtea-web instead:
java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin is obsoleted by icedtea-web, trying to install icedtea-web-1.0.2-3.el6.x86_64 instead

icedtea-web is missing in Centos 6.

My RHEL machine is 6.1, not 6.0, so maybe that's why it works:

The Wiki procedure How to install the Java Runtime Environment from Java.com works for CentOS-6.
