derisking CentOS 6

Post by james93 » 2021/03/29 00:42:21

Hello,

Is it possible to derisk stayon on CentOS 6 e.g. by going with CloudLinux trial and then let it run out so it reverts to CentOS 6 ?
Or is it worth it to go with CL and pay for the three years one could get still out of version 6 and only then convert servers to version 7 which goes til 2029 (please correct me if I am wrong) ?
One could argue the transition cost is the same, just shifted in time, but sometimes current workload would make it even more expensive and error prone, while later there is even more knowledge/experience available re transition.
What do you think ?

Cheers,
J

I think you'd do better to get off it sooner rather than later. Even RHEL EUS only fixes critical security bugs and as dar as I know, CL don't do anything different, just cheaper.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

See: https://access.redhat.com/support/policy/updates/errata
RHEL 6 Maintenance Support 2 Phase did end 2020-11-30.
RHEL 6 ELS ends 2024-06-30.
RHEL 7 Maintenance Support 2 Phase ends 2024-06-30.

If you pay now for EUS and update to 7 when it ends, then you will immediately have to pay for EUS for 7 to extend it to 2026 or so.

Since you are looking at CloudLinux, you might have noticed their AlmaLinux OS that is launching today.
See: https://almalinux.org/blog/

With that you might get to 2029.

You have to install and configure new OS at some point. You have to learn how to do that. IMHO, there is already enough material about how to do it. I do not expect spectacular improvements on documentation any more. What does spread though is erroneous false claims. Misleading "how to"s.

I have a Gentoo installation that is at least 15 years old. In fact, I think that it is older than the hardware it is running on.

Well,
in Gentoo land, the concept of upgrading is quite different compared to the rest of the Linux world
