Migration from 6.7

We intend to move off of our CentOS 6.7 system completely by 2021. I'm trying to determine whether it's still necessary to migrate from this version before December.

I've never installed Linux on a server before, so this is a dreaded task to say the least.

I would love to hear any words of wisdom you may have to offer me.

Thanks

Yes, it's necessary as CentOS 6 goes end of life at the end of November 2020 and there will be no more updates to it. There is NO upgrade from 6 to 7. You need to backup your data and reinstall. Probably safer to commission a new machine and install 7 on that and then migrate your services over to the new one, oe by one.

Thanks for your quick reply. Do you have a favorite resource for guiding a novice through this? What version will I be installing? Is it 8?

Thanks again.

Up to you which version you install but check what you need to run on it is available and will work (another good reason for using a duplicate system that you can set up in advance and test).

CentOS 7 came out in 2014 and will go EOL in 2024
CentOS 8 came out in 2019 and will go EOL in 2029.

Hello TrevorH,

We want to upgrade the CentOS 6.10 to 7. I have tried the in-place upgarde using the upgrade tool. Installation of preupgarde packages was a challenge, I was facing n number of package compatibility/dependency issues, the packages are deprecated and the REDHAT/CentOS is not providing the compatible versions now. If you have performed the upgrade recently, it will be great if you could post the proper steps you followed. I would need to upgrade number of servers soon in my new project.

Building a new server and reinstall the applications/moving the data this method will not work for us as of now, thats why I am looking for online upgrade, could you please let me know is there any proper steps for the same.

Regards,

There is no upgrade from one major version to another and I would guess there never will be. It's a reinstall.

There are essentially three paths:
  • Build new server. Both systems will run simultaneously. Service migration requires minimal or no downtime.
  • Replace current system with new. No new hardware is required and there will be some juggling to preserve data and there will be downtime.
  • Install new system on a vacant partition, like a "dual boot setup". There should be less data juggling.
A new server costs money. The other two cost time.
