X server crashes when backing store is used

Hi! I get an X server crash when running some legacy software on CentOS 6.7 and 6.8. I think it has to do with backing store, because if I start X with "startx -- -bs" the crashes don't happen (but then the graphics in the software are not displayed correctly.) I have tried on 3 different 6.8 machines, two hardware (with Nvidia graphics) and one virtual and one 6.7 virtual machine and they all crash. I have also tried CentOS 6.6 and 7 (hardware and virtual), and I don't get any crashes there. Backing store in xpdyinfo all show "backing-store WHEN MAPPED". Any ideas why this happens and how to solve it? Here is the Xorg log from a crash (CentOS 6.8):

Does it do it if you use the vesa driver instead of the VBox guest additions driver?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Yes, I think so. Not quite sure how I know if the VESA driver is used, but I did a new installation of CentOS 6.8 on VirtualBox without installing the guest additions and get the same crash. The crashes also happen on hardware machines with Nvidia graphics cards and Nvidia drivers. (Two different cards with different driver versions.). Here is the log from the fresh install:
