Can I have questions about Rocky Linux too?

Post by bhamvas » 2022/10/07 11:49:10

I know that this forum is dedicated to CentOS specifically. I got many answers to my questions. Not directly but I found the answer in this forum.
I read here that CentOS is dead and I changed to Rocky but I know that Rocky is another Redhat based distro like CentOS is so I would like to ask officially here am I allowed to ask questions about Rocky Linux as well ?

Thank you for the kind answer in advance.

I don't think we specifically prohibit them, but there is also https://forums.rockylinux.org as well as https://almalinux.discourse.group/ for AlmaLinux. You are definitely better off asking the question on the forum specifically dedicated to Rocky, rather than asking here. Many of the knowledgeable people on this forum are also on the RockyLinux forum, so asking something about Rocky would probably be wasted effort.

We moved to rocky last year at work. I do not like that style of board (I think it is discourse). This board (phpBB) or xenforo are much better forum software. If I have any questions I'll just ask them here.

I have a phpBB board running on CentOS 7 that I am about to move to Rocky 9 so we'll see how that goes...

The quality of forum software is insignificant compared to the Force^H^Hpeers who do help on the forum.
While most questions are about the content that is in RHEL and every derived distro, some issues
are specific to a distro.

For example: the small/critical updates that are released between point updates. Distros add those
packages to their "baseos" and "appstream" repositories. Except Rocky. Yes, they add too, but they do not
keep the previous versions; their current build system effectively recreates repo with only latest version.
Hence, "dnf downgrade" is less an option on Rocky. We don't need to know such trivia here.

At least for Rocky 8 there are 2 packages in the repos, current and -1. That appears to change for Rocky 9 which only has 1 of each.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Fedora-fr forum also moved this week from an old BBcode on a Centos 5 os to Flarum on a Rocky9 os.

I don't like it either. For me, it seems like a pinnball. And it lacks number of features we used to find.
