CentOS is dead, time to bury the corpse
CentOS is dead, time to bury the corpse
Diseased things should not be propped up and above ground. It is an offense to the land of the living, and creates a terrible smell.
Re: CentOS is dead, time to bury the corpse
CentOS 7 is still supported until 2024 so it's not quite dead yet.
CentOS 8 died a premature death at the end of 2021 - migrate to Rocky/Alma/OEL/Springdale ASAP.

Re: CentOS is dead, time to bury the corpse
CentOS 7 is still here for 2 more years. I won't be saying it's dead yet.
Re: CentOS is dead, time to bury the corpse
Alternatives? Preferably with long term support?
Re: CentOS is dead, time to bury the corpse
As Trevor and Atifak say, C7 is not dead yet. It's now in maintenance mode only however so only expect security- and bug-fixes. Alternatives:
- Alma (RHEL rebuild)
- Rocky (ditto)
- Springdale (and again)
- Fedora (worth considering)
- OpenSuSE (different, but designed for big machines/servers as well as desktops

Re: CentOS is dead, time to bury the corpse
I opted for the developer license (16 uses) for RHEL 8. As long as the CentOS forum is here there is support. I am unaware of any issue that may lie ahead for that license, but I guess I'll learn. It was extremely easy to get and also allowed me to their documentation. If you register yourself at each install time, it will install all the latest packages from the Red Hat servers. The price thus far is an email every few days about developer news/courses/etc. Also, the 'third party packages' (epel, elrepo, etc.) seem to be having problems keeping up; I hope that's temporary
For now, I am a happy guy.

I'm using CentOS 7 as a stable desktop with long term support, aided by the advice from https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/cen ... -2021.html. Got a couple of years to find an alternative, I suppose.

This may be due to 8.4 being released recently. If you have specific packages that are having problems, I'd report them on Bugzilla and keep track of/karma them in Bodhi.lightman47 wrote: ↑2021/05/30 11:29:28Also, the 'third party packages' (epel, elrepo, etc.) seem to be having problems keeping up; I hope that's temporary
At least for EPEL; RPM Fusion and ELRepo have their own issue trackers.

Re: CentOS is dead, time to bury the corpse
He got a point. Dead things moving doesn't mean they are alive.
That being said - my solution:
- RHEL developer subscription (main virtualization server) - I fully expect they change the license without prior notice in the future so...
- Alma Linux (additional servers) - the AlmaLinux team I actually do trust for a long term support. With my backup I can easily switch to AlmaLinux should RH go chaos mode again.
- no Rocky Linux - sorry I dont know if it ceases to exist at once without notice
- Oracle? Errr nogo. Like all the others.
