Kpatch discussion ?

Post by _ck_ » 2014/06/27 01:51:43

Wasn't sure where to put this so I guess I'll stick it here unless a mod decides otherwise.

Kpatch for the masses may be a year away but I think it is nice to have an alternative on the horizon now that Oracle has ruined Ksplice for RHEL compatible distributions.

This time it should stay truly open source. Will CentOS adopt it? Will it be backported to 6.x ?

Hmm, apparently it is bundled in RHEL7 - so it will be in CentOS 7 by default?

Just imagine never having to reboot after a (minor) kernel upgrade, very nice, massive uptime.

More here for those that do not know:

I'm currently trying to use kpatch on CentOS 7, but I encounter some issues :
- kpatch package is present, but it just provide kpatch (no kpatch-build...)
- a wrong path in to kpatch Module.symver in kpatch-build
- debuginfo package for the current kernel is missing in debug repositories. (kernel-debuginfo-3.10.0-229.4.2.el7.x86_64)
- the kernel wasn't compile with the gcc version provided by the distrib

I can deal with the first two issues by getting kpatch from github or by modifying the source rpm.
But I have to recompile the kernel to deals with the two others, and that is exactly what I wanted it avoid!!!

I'm told that future kernels should be built with the newer gcc.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
