CentOS HAS BEEN CANCELLED !!!
Did you download the latest version of CentOS 8? good.. its going to be the last one you download...
Apparently, Redhat decided to kill the CentOS Linux project and just keep the Stream project (which is similar to the Rawhide of Fedora).
I am guessing they want to force people to buy Redhat licenses? IBM took over and killed it? who knows...
* CentOS 8 Ending Next Year
* RedHat announcement about moving to Stream

Re: CentOS HAS BEEN CANCELLED !!!
RedHat still has to release their source though right? Wonder if another group will pick it up to keep a functional equivalent of the current RHEL alive.
Re: CentOS HAS BEEN CANCELLED !!!
Well, I guess it's fitting for the general theme of 2020…
But what do I do now? I guess I'm not as affected as someone that uses CentOS for a server, but I picked it specifically to have a stable desktop (or laptop, to be correct) workstation, that well, just works, without any updates breaking stuff or introducing unwanted new features, and over the last year, I have grown quite fond of it.
Stream probably should also mostly work for that, but so should fedora (or OpenSuse, or ubuntu, or about any other somewhat mainstream linux distro), so I'm not really seeing what Stream has on offer for me. Beta testing for RedHat? Sure, can do so, but then why not go straight to fedora? What am I missing here?

Re: CentOS HAS BEEN CANCELLED !!!
Well, I guess this is IBM.
Very pity.
Should I switch to Oracle? Or Ubuntu?

Re: CentOS HAS BEEN CANCELLED !!!
As dismayed as I am - "you had to see this coming". While I am sure IBM pushed this from the get-go, Red Hat had to be considering plugging that profit leak given this day & age.
My concern is what happens with all the third party apps/repos with the switch to Stream. How will they keep up with the 'moving target'? For example, I still can't install gnucash in CentOS 8, despite bug reports & "fixes". I really don't want to start building from source.

Re: CentOS HAS BEEN CANCELLED !!!
I'm just installing Springdale Linux in a VM to compare to CentOS8, also in a VM. I briefly looked at Oracle Linux, but when they started with "create an Oracle account" I backed out.
I'm currently migrating packages from the bare metal C7 system to the C8 system with a planned installation of C8 on the hardware towards the end of 2021. I'll be copying applications now to Springdale to see if that is a sensible alternative.
BTW. Springdale has retained *8.x", not "8.abcd"

Re: CentOS HAS BEEN CANCELLED !!!
Is anybody considering switching to RHEL's free non-production developer subscription? As I understand it, it is free and receives updates.
The only downside as I understand it is that you have to renew your license every year (and that you can't use it in commercial production).

Re: CentOS HAS BEEN CANCELLED !!!
If you have 1 system then a RHEL dev sub may be an alternative - as long as it's not used for production purposes.
If you have 1000 CentOS systems running a business then it's not...

The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Re: CentOS HAS BEEN CANCELLED !!!
Unfortunately, Stream is not an option, we don't want to be beta testers for redhat.
So.... Alpine Linux anyone?

I am considering creating another rebuild of RHEL and may even be able to hire some people for this effort. If you are interested in helping, please join the HPCng slack (link on the website hpcng.org).
