What a weird time to start using CentOS. Literally just installed.

I don't know if bad jokes are tolerated here (please remove if it's not):
A few years ago RH was bought by Big Blue, maybe they should be renamed Blue Smelly Socks?
Or just Blue Socks, as in BSEL.

Still processing this and what, if any, implications it has for me.

Another bit of information in case others haven't seen it yet. Thoughts on CentOS Stream - jperrin.org

I’ve been a member of the CentOS project for the last 16 years, and in that time I’ve had countless conversations with developers who were targeting enterprise deployments, but who wanted to push things just a little beyond what was currently available.

That blog post is a MUST read, because it is the very definition of fact manipulation, a twisted reality that tries to hide the true sad facts of killing the project and the EOL of CentOS 8. It is very similar to the official blog post that first announced the death of centos. Comparing the two, I'd say redhat public relations gave instructions on how to handle the backlash.

The essence is this: redhat decided that they don't want to give free enterprise software to the world and killed centos. In other to avoid the bad press from such a statement, they decided to name their beta channel, instead of RedHat Beta Stream, but name it CentOS Stream. Thus, they pretend that centos still exists but as a rolling distro for testing packages before merging them into RHEL.

Since most of us aren't fooled by the play of words and don't want to become beta testers for redhat, we are waiting to see who will fork the project, so we can move on.

I'm just installing Springdale Linux in a VM to compare to CentOS8, also in a VM. I briefly looked at Oracle Linux, but when they started with "create an Oracle account" I backed out.

You can also look at Rocky and Alma which are CentOS 8 respins.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Just checking in to see if I understood or misunderstood this post: CentOS 8.4 is the End of the Line for CentOS 8?!? That can't be right!! Can it?!? I've yet to migrate ocelot to a new OS, and Rocky Linux is the next OS up. IF it is true that 8.4 is the End of the Line, what is the Extended Support period before we become Centos Refuseniks? 8.4 CAN'T be the End of the Line for CentOS 8.

TrevorH: Where are YOU going after CentOS?!? Rocky Linux?!?

Red Hat cancelled CentOS 8 and moved it all to a rolling release model called Stream. It goes EOL at the end of 2021 now so 8.5 will be the last CentOS 8 version. Rocky and Alma both aim to continue where CentOS left off. If you want to use 8 then use one of those.

There is a draft of EOL messaging being prepared on the CentOS Devel mailing list.
