I have a couple of old tablets that struggle to run C7. It would be very handy to have one in the workshop just as a web browser. Cany anyone recommend a really lightweight distro that will for preference run firefox?

I run Mint in a VM and cinnamon seems to be a bit of a resource hog. Perhaps that is due to the 3D emulation running in software?

AFAIK, Xfce (or possibly LightDM) are the "lightest" desktop environments of them all.

If you want a truly lightweight and fully functioning OS, it's got to be puppy http://puppylinux.com/download.html, the entire OS is about 100 to 200MBs and runs entirely in RAM.
I used it (slacko) exclusively for months a few years ago on an ancient laptop with no hard drive or battery till I got my current laptop.
You wouldn't believe how good it is given its size.

In the olde days ... one could start X11 with a "failsafe" desktop: just one application (xterm), no desktop environment, not even window manager -- no way to move or resize "windows" (but you could start applications with desired geometry).

I presume the "kiosk" are set up similar to that.

It does but a few years ago an experimental user account could be added, but I never tried it.
If you search the net there are some guides on running any OS entirely in RAM, I imagine that wouldn't necessarily be lightweight but I bet if you had the RAM it would go like sh*t off a shiny shovel.
