CentOS

I'm Canadian and this years is my first year of eligibility for OAS (old age security) so I am a little past the average of 40. I don't know what year I started with Linux but the first OS was Red Hat 6 long before the change to the current RHEL OS's. My first computer was a 4 bit dip switch programmed unit which output through four LED's long before Linux was a know name. Machine language only. This was probably in the early 70's. I think it was manufactured by Sinclair. You had to solder it together yourself. From there I went to an Atari 400 and on and on. Currently running a Centos 6.6 server hosting several virtual machines as well as functioning as a Samba file server. The machine has four raid 5 drives and a lot of ram. I run my office with Centos servicing Widoze clients. I use XRDP on the server and login as any user including root from a Win 7 machine (RDP). I must admit that I am an addict to RHEL and have been since the inception of Centos. I am messing around with Centos 7 on a spare machine but not totally enamored with it due to the huge changes from previous Cent OS's. But being a curious sort I am having a great time figuring it out. Many thanks to all the people who freely give their time and knowledge to allow newbies like me to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

I'm in the over 40 camp too, but I've started using CentOS in 2008 when I was 36. It came with a remote server (CentOS 5), so it was command line only. Over the following years I've installed many systems and uncovered the mysteries of CentOS and the command line (which is of course an ongoing project). Having been a long time Windows user, I've switched to Mac in 2011. Thanks to Parallels Desktop I can run both Windows and CentOS any time I like.

I too started fiddling with computers in the eighties, my pride and joy back then was a Commodore 64. Had I known that there were developer resources for it, and that at some point "fiddling with computers" would be a career choice, I would have thrown time and money at learning beyond BASIC much earlier. I think that the early day computer spirit is mostly lost with swish operating systems, and perhaps that's why we enjoy Linux so much: You have to work hard to make simple things happen, and we enjoy a challenge

Ah, I see what you mean Jerry. To be honest, I did not notice the non-contiguous age ranges.

Perhaps it would be acceptable for you to select the nearest range to your age and then state that you "fall into one of the gaps"!

I was thinking about making an editorial change but other things directed my attention elsewhere!

What ages did I forget to put, I don't see any? Was it because someone fixed it? Sorry if I did btw, I just did not notice.

The original poll had: < 18, 20-28, 30-36, 40+ so if you were 19, 29, 37-39 you could not vote
