Post by tuxbrothers » 2010/08/26 11:39:39

Maybe some of you are intrested in Thunderbird for CentOS 5.
The rpms are hosted on TuxBrothers.net.
When you enter the site, on the left there is a button CentOS RPMS.
Instructions are all there, have fun!!

All credits for these RPMS go to my friend and RPM guru "Maurice" from MandrivaClub.nl, who build this for me!

Cheers,

Tux Brothers and Maurice :-D

Thanks tux brothers for the rpms!

With regards to tb3, can you provide your own opinion on the performance? I have read an article (I don't know where I have read it) that tb3 is slower than tb2. I just googled the topic to see if I can find the article that I have read and interestingly I found that most of the results that I found complains about tb3 being slow and their common fix was to go back to tb2. Can the tb3 users comment on this?

Thanks!

I really don't know what you talking about, but i think that's because it's running so smooth on my laptop :-D
Now ik have it running on a Dell notebook (Dual core 2,1GHz) and it's running smooth and eating nothing of my CPU.
Well if you like TB3 i suggest to try it out!

Cool! I would have to backup my files first before trying this out. Searching deeply into the topic I noticed that the complaints for the slowness of tb3 are only felt by the users of the Redmond OS. :-D

I've been using TB3 on a CentOS-5 box for about a week now. All seems fine here.

Anybody know if there are backwards incompatibilities created by Thunderbird 3? If I install it will I be able to fall back to 2 if I don't like it, or will I have to restore the directory tree from backup due to changes made by the new version?

Backup your profile directory, if you don't like TB3 you can always put your backup in place and install TB2
Good luck!

Hi,

I downloaded and installed the available version of Thunderbird (currently 3.1.4), and it seems to work
nicely - quite fast. The main (only) problem I've encountered so far is that clicking on http links from within
an email refuses point blank to open firefox. I've tried changing the helper application to point directly to
firefox (/usr/bin/firefox), all to no avail.

I guess this could be an issue relating to the fact that this is an i386 build of Thunderbird, but my OS is
Centos 5.5 x86_64. If anyone knows where to get the 64 bit build, or have a suggestion to get around this
please let me know, as it's driving me nuts.

Best wishes,

Jon

Actually ... the current version is 3.1.5. I am running the downloaded 32-bit Thunderbird on a 64-bit CentOS. Clicking on a URL opens firefox. I don't remember if I had to do anything special, but there may be a set up for the default browser for a user.
