"Desktop" version = always GNOME based? Markert-share?

When I look on the following page then there is a pure .i386 version and a "_desktop.i386" version:

http://people.centos.org/tru/vmware/centos-5-20091106/

From what I understand is that the "Desktop" version is GNOME based while the non-"Desktop"- version must be KDE based.

Is this correct?

If not: what is otherwise the difference?

What would you estimate: What is the "Market-share" of KDE vs. GNOME based CentOS?

No, if I read this correctly.

KDE is also a desktop, as implied by your next question. In addition to the readme jlehtone linked, the package lists are in the directory so you can see exactly what is installed.

I have no data, and am not sufficiently engaged in this religious debate to try to google the current rankings. Despite KDE being my choice, I strongly suspect that the simple fact that GNOME is part of the default install for RHEL/CentOS (and KDE is not) make GNOME the market leader for this market segment.

that's correct, Desktop is the default (gnome) desktop setup.
You can always "yum groupinstall" KDE or XFCE, if you want.

As this thread is not really General Support related, I'm moving it to Social. ;-)

In CentOS5.4:
Check available groups by:
yum grouplist
For KDE Desktop
yum groupinstall 'KDE (K Desktop Environment)'
And, for XFCE Desktop
yum groupinstall 'XFCE-4.4'
Check manual page by
man yum
@AlanBartlett

Looks like Alan started to move thread in Social. Double ;-)
