just added [c5-testing] etc to /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo and run

# yum update php

# service httpd reload

and i now have centos 5 running php 5.2.6

quick fix

# vi /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients

replace
/usr/bin/xterm -geometry 80x50-50+150 &
with
/usr/bin/xterm -geometry 80x30-50+150 &

X twm default xterm is too big for 800x600 screen

clean install of centos 4.6 (X only no gnome no kde)
login
startx (if it didn't autostart)
X twm default xterm is too big for 800x600 screen so cursor goes off bottom of screen and you cant see what you are typing
