Re: KVM guest fails to switch root

To get a plain text console with virsh console name_of_vm , you do need a serial console on the VM. I didn't have one (and in fact getting one was the point of this exercise). It might be possible to connect to a pty , I haven't tried that. For VNC the guest must be set up with VNC access enabled. W...

Re: KVM guest fails to switch root

Oh! I didn't know that VNC was a possibility :-( From my OP: I don't know how to access the system, as I have no serial console. Is there any other way in? I will try virt-manager , but my link [edit: actually the link the server is on] is very slow and this has not been workable in the past. I susp...

Re: KVM guest fails to switch root

Thanks, Trevor. I'd have loved to see more information. However, that screen was a screenshot taken by virsh screenshot , not a real screenshot of a live terminal. If I'd had a live terminal I could have done much more investigation. I did try to take several really quick sequential screenshots, but...

Re: KVM guest fails to switch root

Further update: The backup failed with exactly the same error. IMHO this means that the act of taking the backup in some way corrupted the virtual disk, which then a) became the backup and b) was used by the restarted virtual. I was able to restore from an older backup which had been taken using a s...

Re: KVM guest fails to switch root

Minor update: After installing guestmount I was able to mount the (shutdown) virtual disk. Of course there was nothing in /run at all (RAM disk?)

KVM guest fails to switch root

I have a KVM virtual that will not boot properly. It stops on "Failed to start Switch Root". A screenshot is attached showing this. I don't know how to access the system, as I have no serial console. Is there any other way in? I will try virt-manager , but my link is very slow and this has not been ...

Seeking to understand updates and CentOS versions

I'm not sure how CentOS versioning works. I installed CentOS8.1.1911 a month or so ago. Immediately after that I applied all available updates. There were around fifty or sixty things that got updated as I recall. Now I see that CentOS8.2.2004 has come out, and yum check-updates shows around 600 upd...

Re: how to get serial console set up at install time

Changes made to that line at boot time don't stick. Or do they? They don't seem to, but maybe I'm doing it wrong, I'm very new to Centos8).

I'm looking for a way to not have to go back in and make changes.

Thanks, K.

how to get serial console set up at install time

Not sure if this is a KVM question or not. I know how to get a serial console working once I have some other access to the virtual - add console=ttyS0 to the kernel line in grub. But how do I get that added to the kernel line in grub at install time? Without having to retrofit it? It looks like it c...

Re: Firewalld Blocking RELATED,ESTABLISHED Inbound Since Update

I've had more of a look at nf_tables now, and while it is still very early days it looks to me as if a huge chunk of the default ruleset is actually only there because firewalld sets up a bunch of stuff you and I don't need. firewalld sets up tables for inet , ip and ip6 . These occupy 318 lines of ...
