Well, that sounds interesting indeed!
Basically, if I understood wel:
I make a partition on a new drive, put file system on it, copy /var/lib/mysql there and update fstab.
after reboot, it should work.
correct?

silly me...

wrong IP address!

several CentOS machines and i mixed IP addreses... no wonder it didn't work.
it does with proper IP address.
