Re: "cannot activate network device eth0"

Woohoo! The problem has been solved. The problem was that I had the IP address for eth1 on a different network than the machine I was trying to connect to. The IP for eth1 was changed to 159.159.159.3 and I can now access the NIC which has a static IP of 159.159.159.2. Everything is solved. Now to c...

Re: "cannot activate network device eth0"

First an update. I was able to get eth1 working. Somehow it got disabled in the BIOS. I enabled it and was able to connect to the internet with it - so I can rule out with certainty that the eth1 adapter is bad. I'm posting now on the machine (accessing the internet through eth0 as it was originally...

Re: "cannot activate network device eth0"

So, I had a RHEL/unix epxert come over and have a go at it. She reinstalled the forcedeth driver and all the network related utilities and udev (which solved the issue of 10-15 minute boot times, which I don't think I mentioned) and now one of the network adapters works. So I can now connect ...

Re: "cannot activate network device eth0"

I suppose it wouldn't work like that. I'm not sure if I added the --enablerepo flag. I probably did but I know "reinstall" didn't work for me. So for each package I used
yum remove
followed by
yum --disablerepo=\* --enablerepo=c4-media install

Re: "cannot activate network device eth0"

ok, so I finally created a suspect-packages file and attempted to reinstall them.
yum --disablerepo \* reinstall $(cat packages-to-replace.txt)
didn't work so I uninstalled and attempted to reinstall each packge individually in the suspect package list I generated. The list and the st...

Re: "cannot activate network device eth0"
One question for which I could not conclusively determine an answer from reviewing the thread - Does the network work if you boot from an older kernel?
Thanks for the question Phil, it's something I didn't make clear. The network doesn't work with any kernel. The ones I have i...

Re: "cannot activate network device eth0"

@toracat. Yes, that is exactly right. That was the first thing I did to rule out a hardware issue. As soon as I get the system back to a normal operational state (if, that is) I'm going to clone the drive onto a new disk. @Phil. Is the "yum reinstall" done from the mounted sysimage in the rescue mod...

Re: "cannot activate network device eth0"

ok, I reinstalled the kernel, and kernel devel, (somewhere suggested I be root for that) and I got past the kernel panic for booting to that kernel. But the ethernet is still down. Same errors as before. I posted the rpm -qa verify output as before here http://pastebin.centos.org/36673 So you're thi...

Re: "cannot activate network device eth0"

Thanks for the reply pschaff. I posted the RPM verify output as suggested. Here's the link http://pastebin.centos.org/36672 I reinstalled module-init-tools and that didn't make a difference, at least as far as the kernel panic or the ethernet problem goes. I haver three kernels installed, is that a ...
