I was able to get ff to update by using the above --disablerepo trick; however, then it would not launch, giving this error /usr/lib64/firefox/firefox: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib64/libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: _XGetRequest And the fix turned out to be sudo yum update libX11 per this pos...

ps, yes, I realize I can work around with
[code]hold=`pwd`
cd /var/cemp/video/canoe
tar blah blah blah
cd $hold[/code]
but it would be nice to know why tar doesn't work as advertised
