Solved.

I had to install mysqlclient15-5.0.45-1.el5.remi.i386.rpm

which I did using rpm -i

I have now upgraded to MySql 5 nd, I have installed MySQL client version: 5.0.37 and yet, when I try and install the perl module I still get the failed dependency error. Can't install perl-DBD-MySQL

When I try and install perl-DBD-MySQL I get a dependency error looking for libmysqlclient.so.15. When I do a yum whatprovides libmysqlclient.so.15 it reports no matches found. I do use other repositories such as Centos plus, centos extras and rpmforge etc. I was told to upgrade to MySQL5 in another ...

No it didn't. I went to install MySQL 5 and got the message:

Missing dependency libmysqlclient.so.15

If you lookup redundant in the dictionary, it says 'see redundant'.
