turns out that it needed
cups-lpd installed and a reboot.
after that , LAN worked fine. Now I need to test the internet connection ...

samba is installed (i guess from the default installation) but not running. [font=Courier]
suser]# rpm -q samba
samba-3.0.33-3.29.el5_5
suser]# /sbin/service smb status
smbd is stopped
nmbd is stopped

re-installation did wonders! :-) I did 3 things differently: A: did a very basic initial install instead of selecting all the wanted packages upfront B: disabled SELinux alltogether from the very start C: run updates before trying to do any configuration after doing the updates, I then tried spamass...
