Another win for CentOS for me

just thought I'd drop a line. I am the IT admin for a local school and we had about 40 Dell workstations donated from a local telemarketing company. These came with blanked hd's and no cd drives. I am having to re install on to these machines and after going through about 5 other distros, which thes...

How many people d oNOT have a single computer with Windows installed on it?

Another poster in another threead thought it was odd that Ido not have any computers in my house with Windows. I will say, I used to have one that dual booted with pclos/win, but no longer. on all 5 computers in my house, not a single one has MS Windows ( or Mac, for that matter) on it. I still work...

Re: Serv-U FTP Server Program Clone?

I don't know. I would need to install Windows to test that and I can't personally afford it. just another reason I use Linux. If you want total granular control over your FTP in Linux, you can always go directly to the config file. That's where all the action happens. if your looking for more comple...

Re: Serv-U FTP Server Program Clone?

I have never used 'Serv U FTP' I can say that vsftpd and proftpd are both excellent FTP apps. If you are looking for simplified interaction with either of those, you probably won't get anything easier than using Webmin to admin these servers. Webmin has modules specific to those two apps and the use...

Re: Systems/Network Monitoring

I believe I would second the Nagios choice. it has been around quite awhile, is well documented and well supported. There are plenty of people with experience using it and it has one of the best recommendation levels I have seen for that type of software. MRTG is sometimes mentioned in the same brea...

Re: CentOS revisor suggestions sought

oh yes, I have hit upon the google returns. I am also prowling other forums directly ( Linux.com, Linux.org etc...) as well.
I have to wait for some memory and a videocard to arrive to get the dev machine up to speed (this week they should be in) and we will be off and running.

Re: Building a server, need some help

What you are discussing isn't a firewall as much as it is a filter. Filters are most often associated with firewalls though as the services are tied closely together. scottlinux is right in that you could just use ddwrt on a linksysy router and get what you need all in one. or, for the fun of learni...

I and the rest of the BEL Project team appreciate the view of the mod team here that we are only trying to provide a useful service. Thank you also for moving this thread to a place that might be a better fit for everyone concerned. Most of the pertinent information is now posted in this thread rega...
