I'm fairly new to linux myself but a general protection fault to the best of my knowledge is usually caused by a grafics problem either addressing memory or driver problem

i had a similar problem with a machine that was built from parts by a friend it seems the ide cables he used came from a pre manufactured machine of a different type to the motherboard after changing the cables to standard 80 line ribbon and setting the jumpers on the drives everything was fine also...

I've had a similar problem too and it too only happened overnight when server was apparently idol : however while sitting up late one night doing some thing entirely diffrent on another machine i noticed a lot of net traffic from the server and then it frooze after close scrutany i found that search...

just a quick note you did put " index.php and index.php3 etc " in you directory directives didn't you...?

try commenting out your deny statements temperarily and see if it helps if yes then you may need to re-think your allow and deny statements altogether

may I suggest reading this it works for me with out any problems and if you want you can add either webmin or ispconfig for your hosting and admin needs :

could you list you machine spec's as it may be a case of not having drivers for your grafics card or not enough memory for the gui's you have installed..but don't worry there are plenty others out there that use less demanding resouses flux box is a good gui for low spec machines but if this is not ...
