One method of "sorting it" is to type into a terminal: killall gnome-panel and then: gnome-panel This restarts the gnome panel and the panel appears on the bottom again. I logged off and back on a couple of times and it looked ok. So will see if it reoccurs over the next couple of days, weeks etc. :...
