NedSlider wrote:
stevecoh1 wrote: Seriously, though, is there a way of undoing GRUB's messing up of a boot record on a Windows hard drive?
Yes - boot from your Windows CD and enter the Recovery Console and issue the command fixmbr. If that doesn't fix it, also try f...

Undo GRUB damage to a Windows Disk MBR

I tried (see other thread) to "rescue" a CentOS hard disk onto a new machine. Unfortunately, the new machine (a Dell Inspiron 530) doesn't support CentOS and I gave up. I then tried to install CentOS onto another hard drive I had lying around. I mistakenly thought I was telling the installer to leav...

Re: Make Centos Hard Drive Bootable on New Machine?

Install makes it all the way through, then dies on boot.

I should never have tried to put linux on this hardware.

Re: Make Centos Hard Drive Bootable on New Machine?

kernel /vmlinuz/2.6.18-8.1.15.el5 ro root=dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 rhgb quiet irqpoll noapic still results in the same kernel panic, albeit by a slightly different path. Now the output shows: irq 11: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option) handlers: [] (usb_hcd_irq+0x0/0x50) [] (usb_hcd_...
Lenard wrote: A lot closer then you think, the info that you can boot into rescue mode is helpful. Re: Make Centos Hard Drive Bootable on New Machine?

Booting from the CDROM with linux rescue all-generic-ide did not get me off the dime - but booting with linux rescue irqpoll did finally get me past the questions and into the shell mode where I could see fdisk and executed the commands you recommended in your first response. Alas, it did no good - ...

Re: Make Centos Hard Drive Bootable on New Machine?

Yes, it boots just fine with the Windows XP it came with. I added my linux drive and can switch the drive it tries to boot from with the BIOS Setup (f2) and/or Boot (f12) utilities. XP works, original Centos kernel panics, and either the Centos 5.0 or 5.1 install disks fail in rescue or install mode...

Re: Make Centos Hard Drive Bootable on New Machine?

OK, dowloaded the Centos 5.1 ISOs and this doesn't work either, although the path to failure is a little different. Significantly, I'm failing not only in the linux rescue mode but I can't even get anwwhere in the install mode. Both fail in the same place: The program is looking for some kind of dri...

Weird Keyboard Behavior in Centos Install Programs

Trying to work my way through various screens of the Linux Rescue program and I notice something strange using my new Dell Keyboard. Keys generally work except the up and down arrow keys seem to perform two arrows worth of action. In other words, on a screen with a large list to pick from, every oth...
