Which port number did you configure? Should be in the setting for relay_host. Default port is 25. I think outlook.com wants 587 for STARTTLS to function. I logged in via SSH because I didn't want the superuser to be exploited by network attackers, I tried to change the superuser back to root, which logged in very quickly
