Running yum update will get you to the latest in any given major version number but will not move you between versions. So yum update will take you from 7.x to 7.y but not to 8.x. Upgrading CentOS to a newer version

If I have to upgrade to a newer version of CentOS (say CentOS 8 for example). Then will I have to reinstall all over the CentOS installation? Or, a simple 'yum update && upgrade' will do?

I am new to Linux and I am trying to run CentOS in a desktop machine. So, I am guessing that does CentOS has a software center like Ubuntu? Or, something similar?

Redhat have announced that KDE will be deprecated in a future major version of RHEL so CentOS 7 is the last version that will ship with it included as part of the distro. IMO, neither gnome nor KDE can be seen as lean and mean. If you need something lightweight then look at xcfe or MATE or cinnamon...
