Re: Suggestions for simpleton moving on from CentOS 7

Grr! This is the second time I didn't get notified when someone responded on this thread - the forum notification system is only batting .333 so far (no, yes, no). Sorry for the slow response - I don't think to continuously check for new posts, assuming instead that the system will tell me. With Ans...

Re: Suggestions for simpleton moving on from CentOS 7

However, if you are a bit familiar with RHEL (CentOS)... "Familiar with" might be stretching it, but perhaps a slight head start since I have notes about what I did last time, which include a few yum commands rather than apt , and some configuration files (although those are mostly for specific pac...

Re: Suggestions for simpleton moving on from CentOS 7

Thanks, Trevor. Yes, I know I could sign up for RHEL, but Linode doesn't support it (or OEL) for deployment. (Plus, I wouldn't remember to keep RHEL registered - I don't want to mess with that.) So I turned my attention to Alma and Rocky, but while trying to learn about the differences between them ...

Suggestions for simpleton moving on from CentOS 7

Looking for advice or links to good tutorials. My server is currently CentOS 7, but I need to start thinking about getting something newer, and I'm afraid I won't know how, or will need a huge chunk of time and/or knowledge I don't have. Background: I am not a server admin, but just a programmer-tur...

Re: Can't access SMTP - likely caused by CentOS 7.4 update

Allow me to revive this thread. After not getting any more help, I switched to using my ISP's server to send mail. But now I really want to get this working, because sometimes my ISP's mail server gets blocked by receiving servers (no doubt someone else on the same IP address is sending spam), and o...

Re: Can't access SMTP - likely caused by CentOS 7.4 update

I've made process, I think. Even though it seemed that iptables was okay, apparently it wasn't, because iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 587 -j ACCEPT made the timeouts go away. But the next wall I'm running into is connection security settings. My TB setting for outgoing mail was STARTTLS, and in S...

Re: Can't access SMTP - likely caused by CentOS 7.4 update

iptables-save, as requested - I don't know how to read those numbers (iptables -L makes more sense to me), but it's what you asked for: # Generated by iptables-save v1.4.21 on Sun Nov 26 08:29:06 2017 *security :INPUT ACCEPT [6669749:2923667756] :FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0] :OUTPUT ACCEPT [7046967:21140090...

Re: Can't access SMTP - likely caused by CentOS 7.4 update

I know there was too much verbage in my description, but buried in there was the answer to your question: Absolutely nothing gets written to /var/log/maillog when I try to send mail. Today I worked on it more. First I tried setting up logging on the client end - Thunderbird doesn't log by default, b...

Re: Can't access SMTP - likely caused by CentOS 7.4 update

Can anyone give me some ideas of how to troubleshoot this? After about 20 seconds Thunderbird says, "The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.mydomain.com timed out." Postfix is running and listening, so what could be causing the problem?

Re: After upgrade to 7.4, finding an assortment of little issues

As I feared, the few problems I mentioned earlier were not the only ones. I have now discovered that I can't send mail via an email client. Today was the first time I tried since a few days before the fateful yum update, so I can't prove the failure happened that day, but since I haven't changed any...
